Hippo Campus, the Minnesota band that often receives comparisons to Vampire Weekend, has just released a hymnal ballad that sets them apart. Like sunset clouds in the distance, “Monsoon” is calming and alluring at first glance. However, as the clouds move closer, we discover it is a somber reflection of a love lost yet a desire to celebrate that life. It’s sudden showers on a summer day and that internal battle of assessing whether that’s a blessing or a tragedy. Either way, it’s absolutely gorgeous and a representation of this band’s early maturity and potential.

Available in February on Grand Jury.
